Continuing the Tradition: The American Wind Ensemble

In our largest and most ambitious concert event to date, Chicago Symphonic Winds closes the season featuring works of living, female, American composers who all actively compose for the wind medium. Works on the program will include Dragon Rhyme by Chen Yi,  Magenticfireflies by Augusta Read Thomas, Fascinating Ribbons by Joan Tower, and the world premier of Appetite Concerto for Amplified Harp and Wind Band by Heidi Joosten. Please join us for a full evening of events:

A Tribute to W.A. Mozart

Chicago Symphonic Winds pays homage to Viennese musical tradition by dedicating this concert to Vienna’s most famous composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. But don't expect your typical Mozart-only concert! This program explores how Mozart dramatically influenced composers of various eras and nationalities, performing Jonathan Harvey’s Serenade in Homage to Mozart as well as Jean Francaix’s Hommage à l’ami Papageno, before ending the program with Mozart’s masterwork for winds: Gran Partita.

British Works for the Wind Ensemble

British composers have provided the wind band with some of the most performed and well-known works for the wind ensemble. Enjoy an evening of these masterworks for the wind ensemble including Gustav Holst’s Hammersmith, Ralph Vaughan-Williams English Folk Song Suite, Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances, and Gordan Jacob’s William Byrd Suite.

An Oktoberfest Celebration

Celebrate Oktoberfest with Chicago Symphonic Winds as we pay homage to the rich German tradition of classical music for winds. Led by Dr. Erica Neidlinger, the program will feature some of the most renowned composers including Richard Strauss’ Serenade for Winds, Felix Mendelssohn’s Notturno, and Louis Sporh’s Notturno. An Oktoberfest celebration will occur immediately following the concert and will include German refreshments, live polka music, and beer!

Storytime with Sousa

Join CSW for Storytime with Sousa, an interactive musical experience combining the art of narrative with music to create a multi-sensory storytelling concert for kids. Using a narrator to read excerpts from a children's book on the life of John Philip Sousa, the ensemble will complement the storyline with well-known American wind band favorites in the style of a traditional John Philip Sousa concert.

Admission for this concert is free.
